Snap to it!

Standard

The latest news from our kind hosters at WordPress.com seems to be the inclusion, on the 10% circa of the blogs hosted here, of the SnapIt wordpress extension.

snapit-preview This extension, when you point your mouse over a link, “pops out” a little baloon containing a little screenshot of the linked resource.

Reading the post comments I see I am one of the few which doesn’t really like this “extension”.

While it can have sense occasionally, on singular and short post, when applied on a daily basis to longs, very linked, posts (may I use the word “article” ?) it becames a PITA since you can’t scroll over the article without having this baloons popping around.

Also, it makes necessary to download more bytes when you want to load the page you need. First you download the page and then you have to wait for the extra content (and the creation of thumbnails) to be loaded. I find it disrespectful of people with slow internet connection (you know, fiber cable in all houses is a luxury that only in USA or Japan is taken for granted).

It is, in any case, a waste of bandwidht … if a link seems interesting I’ll go to see it myself anyway. And finally I do ask myself what happens about web accessibility from the ‘differently able’ people. Can’t think to anything good.

So I hope this will be implemented in the less invasive and the most clever way possible!

  1. I saw it a few days ago when the internet in Asia was in a very slow speeds caused by the recent earthquake in Taiwan. It keeps popping out and had no idea it was from wordpress. It was seriously annoying.
