Days ago I’ve found this interesting project called Offscreen magazine that talks to us about

… what happens off the screen — outside our digital world. We encourage you to put your iPad down, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy a high quality read the old-fashioned way.

A physical product that can be touched, collected, and read anywhere, we believe, is a logical way to present this type of content. Reading it offline, in a distraction-free environment, allows us to step away from the digital context and reflect on our industry from a more perennial angle. And, let’s be honest, who doesn’t like flipping through a real magazine?

I’m discovering this only now but I think that’s anyway worth a mention here!

But I’m preparing a virtual machine for a bioinformaticians’ post PhD course and we choose a modern distro for this. Given my skills and experience the choice went over Fedora.

So I’m playing a little around to see how the Gnome Shell behaves and decided, since I have some spare time, to customize it a little. I could not ever imagined in my wildest dreams that modifing GDM login screen would be such a PITA.

Luckily enough a 2010′s post from Alvin T. Enguillo is still the easiest method (and with this I’ve said it all if you read the article) to achieve this goal.

So here’s my state of the art post in this overflow of posts, news, tweets and such on the matter.

First of all don’t panic. There’s nothing to be seriously scared of. Apple has got a solution, that while being late is easy and reliable in solving the issue.

In my opinion it’s necessay to know more on the topic, so here’s two links. The first from Apple, short and concise as all the public statements on security by them. The second is a compendium of Ars Technica on the issue:

Now you probably want to know if you got the “infection” and did not know. This FlashbackChecher tool, after having being downloaded & installed, helps you to this. Eventually it asks you to remove the problem but the developer invites you to do so with Apple tools.

And here we come to the easiest solution out there. With three security updates in less than a week Apple has proposed to it’s user both a patch and a remover of this malware for their users’ computers. All we have to do is to start the Software Update tool and apply every one of them.

Mac OS X 10.5 users are now being leaved on their own on this, since Leopard is no more supported. Apple suggests to disable Java on Safari (and you can find how to do that in the Apple’s link provided above) and I think that FlashbackChecker can help you too. You’re welcome to leave me a note in comments if you have other solutions for Leopard.

Eventually on a second user on the system everything runs smoothly so instead of making a complete uninstall of the browser you can try to reset the user’s preferences so that at the next launch it will like it does on a fresh / clean install.

There are two methods of achieving this.

First Method

Open Google Chrome and then go to: Options – Personal Stuff – Users – Delete User.

If you are the only chrome user, you will be the only user in the list. Click on “DELETE THIS USER” and viola…. You have reset Google Chrome to default settings.

Second Method

This one involves opening the Terminal.app. You’ll have something like:

Take note of  YOUR-USERNAME value (the one in bold before the @ at the line above – which is called ‘users short name’ in Mac OS X) and then give these two commands, with Chrome not running:

mv /Users/YOUR-USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/First Run /Users/YOUR-USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/old_First Run

and

mv /Users/YOUR-USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default /Users/YOUR-USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default---OLD

Now you can launch again Google Chrome and check if everything is all right. If so you can remove the ‘backup’ of the two items above with

rm -rf /Users/YOUR-USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/old_First Run

and

rm -rf /Users/YOUR-USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default---OLD
