Google new Hangouts messaging service is quite impressive — it takes Google’s old and neglected Talk service and upgrades it with always-on communication, support for images, video calling, and much more.

But for all of the improved service that Hangouts offers, if you upgrade the Google Talk service within Gmail to Hangouts (by selecting the “Try the new Hangouts” option in Talk’s menu), you lose some significant features — namely the ability to set your availability status and, more importantly, the ability to place or receive Google Voice calls from within Gmail.

Essentially, the new Hangouts removes the option to host a Google Voice call on your computer, something that many users find convenient and necessary in their day to day workflow.

Perspective is a platform for exploring, creating, and sharing audiovisual stories. Today’s storytelling involves a mishmash of apps, websites, blog tools, and technologies. Perspective simplifies all this by combining the essential elements of storytelling into a single iPad App.

Some days ago I found this app for our beloved iOS devices which, at least from the screenshots, seems to be a real nice and effective alternative to Apple’s own Keynote.app. It’s called Perspective.

At the moment I do not have presentation to make in near future, so I’m writing this down as a self note reference. Do you have any real, hands-on experience with this software (or something similar)?

The quarterly report shows that 74 different programs from 24 different vendors are installed on the average UK PC and 28 of them, just over a third, are from Microsoft.
That third, and the operating systems, are mostly kept up to date with Microsoft’s Windows Update system. But beyond that, there’s another 23 different autoupdate mechanisms for the remaining programs which need to be monitored or managed.
While some programs have auto-update mechanisms with silent updates, other programs which need regular updates require the user to visit the vendor’s web site to check whether an update was needed.

The report notes that around 8.9% of users have unpatched operating systems and estimates that, on average, 6.5% of programs on a PC aren’t up to date. Around 3.4% of programs on the average PC are also end-of-lifed and no longer have security patches available for them.

What’s the point of the “check-in”? I’ve been pondering this lately as I re-evaluate my various social apps that support this kind of “feature.”

The intention of checking in at your favorite restaurant or coffee shop must offer more than just announcing to the world where you are. I’ve been told it allows others to the opportunity to meet up with you if they’re close by. Never have I experienced this. In theory it sounds great that I might be able to spontaneously hang out with a friend of mine if they knew where I am right now. In my experience, this has never worked for me.

My news feed is full of people checking into to places. So what value have I received from this? Absolutely nothing. With every post that I’ve seen from a friend sharing their location, at most I’ve seen comments from other people such as “I love that place” or “I had a bad experience there.”

When a large majority of people are using this feature, all of a sudden receiving push notifications becomes an unbearable feature. There’s little to no value extracted at having twenty push notifications on my lock screen of random places my friends are at.

How the hell am I supposed to get anything out of this that’s meaningful? I just can’t see this as being a feature that will have any longevity.

I can agree with every single quote … and while on the road to go to a place I’m checking TripAdvisor or Booking.com or 2Spaghi.it (here in Italy) specialized websites and never, ever Foursquare or something similar (ie Gowalla or Yelp) …
